Representatives of the Emmaus House project recently received a check for $5,000 from World Savings for the completion of the city’s new shelter for battered women.

Project directors David Rodriguez and Hannah Petersen accepted the check from World Savings Vice President Debbie Sparrer and Hollister branch manager Denise Borges.

Organizers had hoped to have the shelter at Sunnyslope and Valley View roads completed in February but fell short of their goal because of a lack of funding.

Construction on the 6,000-square-foot facility that will serve as a 24-hour emergency shelter for battered and abused women began in 2000 after more than seven years of planning.

The San Benito County Victim Witness Program estimates that there are more than 360 cases per year related to spousal abuse in San Benito County. The victims would be sent out of the county to emergency shelters in Monterey, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties if a local shelter was not available.
