In arguably the biggest win in team history, the Hollister-based Central Coast Barnstormers staved off the Solano Chiefs 30-28 Saturday at South Valley Middle School in Gilroy in a pivotal Golden Gate Amateur League football contest.

The Barnstormers, now ranked 11th in the nation for AAA teams, jumped to a 20-0 lead, only to watch a Chiefs rally. The Barnstormers led 23-14 at halftime.

Quarterback Bryan Smith connected on a scoring strike to Craig Shara to start the third period.

Down 30-22, Solano crept to within two points with 1:43 remaining. The Chiefs went for two but the pass was broken up by the Barnstormers’ Juan Rios.

The Chiefs attempted an onside kick, but the Barnstormers recovered to preserve the victory.

Smith ended the day 15-for-22 passing for 224 yards and four TDs. He had one interception.

The Barnstormers (4-0) continue their homestand Saturday at South Valley Middle School when they host the Elk Grove Wolverines at noon.
