At San Benito High School, students say they bleed the school colors, Baler red, but lately they’ve been gushing green.
The school’s assembled student body selects a beneficiary each year and organizes a multi-week drive to bring in the cash. This year, the fundraising goal is $20,000. With $7,500 collected, students are more than a third of the way there.
“To me it’s really inspiring to see the different ways they come up with to get the money,” said ASB Director Catalina Lemos. “They’re really dedicated.”
This year, the beneficiary is Kaylin Dominguez, a 2010 graduate who suffered a seizure in April that caused her to go into cardiac arrest four times and left her with an anoxic brain injury.
So far, students have been holding bake sales, asking for donations outside of local grocery stores and going door to door in their ASB shirts to raise money for the cause. They have a little extra motivation beyond good karma too, because if they meet their goal Lemos will dye her hair pink.
Students hope to raise the majority of the money in time for the Benefit Ball on Dec. 12, when they’ll award a check to Dominguez’s family.
The students will be asking for donations for the benefit drive from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday outside the Safeway in Hollister. To make a donation, write a check payable to San Benito High School and specify that the money is for Kaylin Dominguez in the memo. Checks can be dropped off with Lemos in room 352 or in the Student Activities Office in room 351.
