The U. S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is accepting applications for summer seasonal fire fighting jobs on Northern California fire engine crews, a helicopter-borne fire crew and the Diamond Mountain Interagency Hotshots.
Also available are positions in the agency’s hazardous fuels reduction program, which focuses on projects to reduce wildfire danger.
To receive early consideration, applications must be filed over the Internet by Jan. 27, 2009. The final application deadline is April 30, 2009, for general firefighting jobs, and May 29, 2009, for positions on the Hotshot crew.
Job announcements, including the qualifications, salaries and application instructions, are available online at www.usajobs.opm.gov. Applicants should look for announcement numbers DOI-FIRE 2009-006 (engines, helitack and fuels crews) and BLM-FIRE 2009-007 (hotshots).
“We recommend that people apply early to have the best chance at landing one of these jobs,” said Mark Beterbide, assistant fire management officer for the BLM in Northern California.
BLM’s Northern California firefighters work at stations in Susanville, Ravendale, Alturas, Cedarville and Whitethorn (King Range National Conservation Area on California’s North Coast). They work in a season that usually runs from June through mid October.
“Our fire crews can be called to fires anywhere in the west, and even across the nation,” Beterbide said. “When not working on fires, they can be assigned to fire hazard reduction projects and natural resources improvement work.”
Information on these jobs is available by calling BLM field offices in Alturas, 530-233-4666; Arcata, 707-825-2300; Cedarville, 530-279-6101; or Susanville, 530-257-0456.
