Community blood drive: The Leslie L. Garratt Post 6359 will host a community blood drive Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 58 Monterey Street, in San Juan Bautista. The bloodmobile will be located in the parking lot and blood will be drawn by the staff of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula’s blood center. Relay For Life: Hollister’s annual Relay For Life will be Aug. 3 and 4, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the San Benito High School stadium. So far there are 40 teams signed up on the website, with 297 participants. Money raise online for Hollister totals $43,722, with more donations to be collected throughout the 24-hour event. The opening ceremony will be 11 a.m., with a survivors’ lap at 11:30 a.m. A luminaria ceremony honoring those lost to cancer will be held at 9 a.m. On Saturday, there will be a fight back ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by closing ceremonies at 11 a.m. To donate or find a team, visit www.relayforlife.org/ and search for Hollister. You don’t hear much about how important it is to work on your attitude while golfing, but it’s just as important as the swing.

After nearly 40 years of memberships at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, change is coming to the once-community-owned golf course.

High Heels aren’t allowed on the golf course. I’m not talking about the dress code on the course, but a way to help you hit the ball further. Many golfers lose distance when they lift their heel too high off the ground on their back swing. Some ladies — and quite a few beginners — lift their heel until only the toe of their shoe is on the ground.

Golfers must thing they are Superman or the Hulk because when I ask my students to keep their feet shoulder-width apart, their feet are about four-feet wide.

When you golf, think about your practice time as making deposits and playing time as withdrawals from your golfing account. Make big deposits with good practice sessions and fixing troubled shots.
