ANNIVERSARY: Hansen’s celebrate 70 years: Bill and Deon Hansen celebrated 70 years of marriage on March 24, 2012. The couple, from Morgan Hill, celebrated their wedding anniversary at Woodland Club House in Morgan Hill.

Engagement announcement: Kakebeen-Kretz

Renee Marie Kretz and Aaron Kakebeen were engaged July 4, 2011. Family and friends gathered for an engagement party, which was hosted by Aaron’s parents at their home.

HONORS: Students complete senior project, TheraPE: Santa Clara University graduating bioengineering seniors Sarah van Keulen (St. Catherine/Presentation), Sofia Pour and Kristi Hockenson spent a year on their senior engineering project, TheraPE, a new type of pulmonary embolectomy device. TheraPE was designed and developed by the seniors to better remove blood clots from the heart, is patent pending and won first place at SCU’s annual senior engineering competition.

HONORS: Caitlyn Pierotti: Caitlyn “Cat” Pierotti was recently honored at Kentucky State University with the Outstanding Seniors in Journalism Award along with making Dean’s List (Spring/Fall).

Community spotlight: Teachers of the year named

The San Benito County Office of Education named the 2012 Teachers of the Year in April. Once a year, the Office of Education recognizes the hard work and dedication of one educator from each school in the county. This year’s recipients are listed below:

HONORS: Jason Anders: First Lt. Jason Anders, USMC, recently returned to California after completing a seven month tour in Afghanistan. Anders worked with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine as they advanced our country’s mission.

Community Spotlight: YMCA hosts Healhty Kids Day; Outdoor Club cleans riverbed

The YMCA had more than 500 members of the community join in celebrating Healthy Kids Day April 21. The annual event had more than 44 nonprofits and local businesses participating in the outdoor fair. They raffled off eight sports balls and offered the first day to sign up for summer camp. More spaces are available and those that sign up before May 15 will get a free camp T-shirt.

Community spotlight: Science Fair winners came from around the county

Students in fourth through eighth grade competed in the County Science Fair, with eight students selected to represent the county at the state science fair.
