Bone Off rib cook off: The fourth annual Bone Off rib cook off will be June 1 at the San Benito County Historical Park, in Tres Pinos. The amateur barbecue contest starts at 9 a.m., with judging at 3 p.m. for the 35 contestants. Admission is free. The event will include live music and games for the kids. Healthy Kids Day: The YMCA of San Benito County will host Healthy Kids Day April 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 351 Tres Pinos Road, in Hollister. The event will include information about the YMCA programs and summer camps, as well as informational booths of other community organizations. The day will include fun activities that focus on health and wellness. The event is free, though families can pay to join the YMCA or sign up for programs. Residents and visitors to Hollister can start their holiday season with the Lights On Celebration on Saturday, with activities from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Last year, the organizers expanded the activities to the daylight hours for the first time.
American Legion Post 69 is teaming up with a nonprofit that helps area veterans by putting on car shows. The American Legion is planning a resource fair as well for local veterans, including representatives from Veterans Affairs and other agencies that provide support to veterans.
The Relay For Life committee hosted the annual “Paint the Town Purple” Day Tuesday to recognize community members who have survived cancer. At 5:30 p.m., a group gathered at the Veterans Memorial Building for a dove release to celebrate, honor and remember those affected by cancer. On the same day, Tres Pinos School students held a Relay Recess to raise money for the American Cancer Society and awareness about prevention strategies.
A couple dozen residents gathered in the Veterans Memorial Building Feb. 16, in hopes that their names would be among the first 30 called in a lottery for the second phase of a self-help housing developing on the west side of Hollister.
