There is nothing quite like the smell of clean pages, free of crinkles and the smooth cover that come with a brand new book. Barnes and Noble employees in Gilroy have high hopes this season of passing along at least 500 pristine novels, hardbacks and paperbacks to Go Kids, Inc.

The nonprofit provides preschool, childcare centers and a resource library to families in San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.

Last year the annual holiday book drive collected nearly 170 books for the Mexican American Community Services Agency, Inc., which works with low-income and at-risk Latino youth.

“We just pick an organization that we think will get the most impact with it,” said Nancy Asay, the community relations manager for Gilroy’s Barnes and Noble. “Go Kids has programs for infants, preschool and school age children.”

The holiday book drive runs through Jan. 1 and nearly 200 books have already been collected. Customers can come in, peruse the children and teen book sections for their own childhood favorites or they can request a Barnes and Noble employee select a book for them to donate.

The selection of donated books runs the gamut from favorites such as “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” by Laura Joffe Numeroof to “The Indian in the Cupboard” by Lynne Reid Banks to newer installments such as “A Series of Unfortunate Events” by Lemony Snicket.

“We have books behind the cash register so people can at the last minute [when they are paying] pick out a book and they don’t have to come back or stand in line,” Asay said.

The cashiers are keeping track of each donated book they sell for a little in-house competition.

Next year the store will select another local nonprofit for the holiday book drive.

“Each year we think of a place that will really benefit from the book drive,” Asay said.
