Hollister – Although the game was a little closer than the girls’ game, the Haybalers will take it as it comes, especially after a tough weekend tournament.

San Benito defeated Carmel 12-1 in the second game of the double header Tuesday at San Benito High School.

The Haybalers were coming off of a 1-3 finish in the Palo Alto tournament over the weekend. Their last loss was in 15-14 contest to Los Gatos after being up most of the game.

“Everyone needed this one,” said Baler coach Tom Agan. “They’re a good team. It was closer than the score says. We changed our offense around, and we are a better team than two weeks ago.”

San Benito (10-9, 4-0 TCAL) was up 2-0 after the first period after goals from Joel Smith and Zach Bainter. Blane Curtice had a spin-around shot in the second quarter, and Lucas Zepeda stayed with a play to put the Balers up 4-0 at halftime.

But in the second half, San Benito opened it up more. Joel Smith led the team with three goals. Zepeda, Curtice, Bainter and Dave Smith, who had to sit out most of the second quarter after an injury, each had two goals. Logan Kratzer also scored a goal after a scramble in front of the net.

Carmel (12-6, 3-3 TCAL) had its chances to score though. The Padres lobbed a ball over goalie Alex Marks, but Marks was able to recover for one of his seven saves.

Carmel scored its only goal with 3:31 left in the third on a behind-the-back flick shot by Parker Moran. Chase Motley made some nice saves for the Padres coming out of the goal box.

San Benito faces its toughest matches of the year in the final two league games against Live Oak and RLS.
