New scholarship committee hosts fundraiser
A newly formed scholarship committee is hosting a benefit fundraising dinner Oct. 26 at El Kora Restaurant. The Flores/Fata/Hernandez Scholarship is named for Julian Flores, Gene Fata and John Z. Hernandez. Beginning in 2014, two $500 Scholarships will be awarded, one each, to a deserving San Benito High School student, a male and a female. The requirements are: applicant must maintain a 3.0 GPA, be active in extracurricular activities, i.e. student government, and be college bound. The benefit fundraising dinner is Saturday, Oct. 26 at El Kora Restaurant, 204 Fourth St. in Hollister beginning at 5 p.m. Classic hard rock music will be provided by Nightveil. Friends of Mitch Dike Road To Recovery
Friends of Mitch Dike and his girlfriend, Lydia – both of whom were involved in a serious motorcycle accident and were hit by a drunk driver in August 2012 – are hosting a fundraiser from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 19 in the back room at Paine’s Restaurant. According to an announcement from the organizers, they both sustained serious injuries and Mitch received the brunt of it all. Many scars and surgeries later, Mitch is still in need of two more surgeries to help him walk and sit properly. They are inviting residents to honor him as well as support him for a Santa Maria Style BBQ, silent auction, 50/50 raffle bake sale and great entertainment provided by Aaron Avila & Second Wind Band. The San Benito County chapter of California Retired Teachers will hold its next business meeting on Oct. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. A luncheon will be served after the meeting. The guest speaker will be Mary Ann Hughes, director of the San Benito County Food Bank.

Renaissance Faire
HOLLISTER – The Northern California Renaissance Faire runs Sept. 14 through Oct. 13 at Casa de Fruta, in Hollister weekends, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $25 at the gate children 12 and under are admitted free. Each weekend has a different theme and there will be a free Celtic rock concert each Saturday night. A weekend pass, which covers entrance for Saturday and Sunday on one weekend is $35. Bornia Boys band could advance
The Bornia Boys blues band won first place in a field of three bands at The Golden Gate Blues Society International Blues Challenge on Sunday at McGovern’s in San Mateo. The Bornia Boys will now advance to Biscuits and Blues in San Francisco on Sept. 29 to compete with three other bands at The International Blues Regional Final IBC. The winner will represent The Golden Gate Blues Society at The Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis from Jan. 21 to Jan. 24.
Zazen meditation
The Hollister Japanese Temple Garden will start offering weekly zazen meditation classes on the forms, spirit and practice of Soto Zen with Robert Reese. It includes 40 minutes of sitting meditation, ten minutes of walking meditation, followed by dharma talk and discussion. The sessions are Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at 920 Riverside Road, in Hollister. Reese has been practicing in the zen lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi for 25 years.
