Retail Stores: This free eight-hour training course will help you learn the basics of working in retail. The first workshop will be held Friday, Jan. 30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Gavilan College SBDC offices at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church Street, Building E in Gilroy. USDA: USDA Farm Service Agency has been accepting applications from local farmers who suffered at least a 35 percent loss of production or significant quality loss on a 2001 or 2002 year crop due to a natural disaster weather condition. The deadline to file an application is Friday, Jan. 30. Interested farmers must contact the local Farm Service Agency office at 831-637-4360 to schedule an appointment prior to the deadline date.

Scouting for Food: Local boy scouts and cub scouts will be scouting for food in your neighborhood Saturday, Jan. 31. Please leave any canned goods by your front door in a bag. The scouts will pick up your donations and deliver them to the county food bank for distribution to local families in need. Cans or plastic containers only. No glass bottles or perishable food.

Italian Night: The Italian Catholic Federation will hold its annual “Night in Italy” dinner dance Saturday, Jan. 31 at Sacred Heart Church’s O’Reilly Youth Center, Sixth and College streets.

Hors d’ oeuvres and no-host cocktails will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 8 p.m. and dancing. The menu includes barbecued chicken, homemade ravioli, salad, wine and dessert. Proceeds benefit local charities.
