WATER UTILITY TRAINING: A Water Treatment Plant Operation class will begin at 8 a.m. on Sept. 11 and run eleven consecutive Saturday mornings at San Juan Bautista City Hall, 311 Second Street. The course will introduce conventional water treatment plant operation processes and prepare students for the Grade 2 Water Treatment Plant Operator exam in Spring of 2005. Fall BALL: The Hollister Little League will hold Fall Ball sign-ups Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at at the Little League fields at Veteran’s Memorial Park. The cost is $40. The season begins Sept. 1 and runs for eight weeks.

Public Transit Hearing: The San Benito County Local Transportation Authority will host a public hearing on August 5 at 5:30 p.m. to provide information and receive comments from the public regarding proposed modifications to Fixed Route and Dial-a-Ride transit services. SUBSTITUTE TEACHER TRAINING: The San Benito Office of Education is providing a substitute teacher training course from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Aug. 10 – 11 with a follow-up session from 3:30 – 6 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the San Benito County Office of Education, 460 Fifth Street in Hollister. Participants will learn classroom management techniques, teaching strategies, how to develop a substitute kit, and receive a copy of “The Substitute Teacher Handbook.” The cost is $75. YOUTH SOCCER: Hollister Recreation is still accepting registration for Fall Youth Soccer and Youth Winter Basketball. The soccer season begins on Aug. 21 and basketball begins on Oct. 16. RALLY RAFFLE: The Hearts on Crusade Relay for Life Team will hold a raffle each hour of the event on Aug. 6 – 7 with the chance to win any of 34 prizes. Buy tickets for one dollar, 6 for $5, or 15 for $10 at the Hearts on Crusade booth beginning at 5 p.m. on Aug. 6.

DONATIONS FOR RUMMAGE SALE:  Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) is preparing for their third annual rummage sale to be held in September. We are now accepting donations of usable household goods, clothing, pet supplies, etc. Tax-deductible donations may be dropped off at the San Martin Shelter, 12370 Murphy Avenue, San Martin Monday-Saturday, 12:00-5:00 p.m. (closed Tuesday). 

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: The First Presbyterian Vacation Bible School will take place on Aug. 9-13. “Lava Lava Island, where God’s love flows,” is the theme for this week of Bible fun, crafts, games, food and music. A mission project of bibles for Latin America is also part of the week’s activities. The school runs from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. Kindergartners through fifth grade are welcome.
