CHARTWELL SCHOOL BENEFIT: Chartwell School for dyslexic children is celebrating its fifth annual “Brilliant Visions,” a party and auction to raise funds for the school and its educational outreach programs. Greenhouse production workshop: UC Cooperative Extension and the Santa Clara Valley Water District present the 2004 Greenhouse Production Workshop for the Environmental Horticulture Industry on Thursday, April 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the San Martin Lions Club, 12415 Murphy Ave., San Martin. Dinner/auction: The Nan Pipestem Wildlife Rehabilitation Center hosts its fifth annual dinner/auction Friday, April 2, at the Hollister Elks Lodge, located in the Hollister Airport. The raffle and silent auction will be at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. and a live auction to follow. EARS FUND-RAISER: Elephants of Africa Rescue Society is hosting a fund-raiser at the event facility at Wild Things in Salinas on Saturday, May 22. The semi-formal dinner/silent and live auction will be held under a spacious heated tent and feature the acrobatics of Wayne Handley Aerosports during a private airshow. Tickets are $125 each. Tri-tip barbecue fund raiser: The Aromas-San Juan Bautista Community Schools Foundation will hold its annual tri-tip barbecue dinner/auction Saturday, April 17, at the Aromas Grange Hall. Bike blessing: The Top Hatters Motorcycle Club’s Hollister Chapter will hold its 11th annual bike blessing Sunday, April 4. Bikers are invited to meet at Whiskey Creek Saloon, 201 Fifth St., from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The blessing will be at noon at Sacred Heart Church, at the corner of Fifth and College street. Education Fund: Members of the community are being asked for tax deductible donations to help support the Connie O’Connor Education Fund. Since her untimely death in 1996, Connie’s family has helped keep her spirit and love for teaching alive by raising money for schools in Hollister. Connie attended Sacred Heart School and San Benito High School, and after finishing college, came back to her community and taught second and third grade at Sunnyslope Elementary. Since her death in 1996, more than $20,000 has been raised for school supplies in Hollister. Community Pantry: Volunteers wanted for data entry and drivers. Data entry volunteers are needed at the Community Pantry office and can choose your schedule, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drivers are needed to pick up bread at local stores on Monday and/or Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to about 10:30 a.m., and on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. They are needed to pick up tortillas in Watsonville on Mondays and Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Interested individuals should call the Community Pantry, located at 30 Airport Drive, at 637-0340.
Moving Wall: The Hollister Independence Rally Committee and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hollister Post 9242 is announcing the Moving Wall exhibit to be on display at the old Fremont School from June 30 to July 5. The memorial will be open around the clock. HIRC and the VFW are looking for volunteers to help setup the event and the manning of the memorial around the clock. Kindergarten Registration: Southside School Registration is through April 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proof of birth and immunization are required, and the student must be 5 years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2004.
KICK THE HABIT: Learn a step-by-step approach to quit smoking and how to maintain a smoke-free life at the YMCA, 339 Fifth st., Hollister, March 30 to May 11. Bay Meadows: A bus trip to Bay Meadows will be held April 14 at $60 per person. The fee includes bus transportation to Bay Meadows, tip for driver, admission, program and buffet, including snacks. The bus departs at 9:30 a.m. from Gold’s Gym parking lot and returns at 6:30 p.m. Reservation and money must be turned in by March 31 to the SBCAOR Office.
Historical Society: The San Benito County Historical Society will be holding its monthly general meeting on March 31 at 7 p.m. at the Dunne Park Club House, at West and 6th streets in Hollister. A reading will be offered pertaining to the history of Jesse Ross and Warren Bowden, two early pioneers in San Benito County. Refreshments will be served and the event is free to the public.

Beg and borrow: The Monterey Peninsula Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a “beg, borrow and deal” event to raise money for local schools and the Children’s Miracle Network. The fund-raiser is for high-school students in teams of three. The last weekend in April, teams will complete tasks on a list, similar to a scavenger hunt.
