Professional bull riding is coming back to San Benito County.

As a kickoff to the 2007 San Benito County Fair, the Mike Mason memorial Professional Bull Riding Inc. event will be held Thursday, Sept. 27.

The event is being promoted by Fault Line Bucking Bulls, a partnership venture between Judd Leffew, co-star of Country Music Television’s “Cowboy U,” Katie Parker, Billy Aviles, Dana Aviles, and Tim and Mike Baumgartner.

The event will feature some of the top bulls in the nation, according to Billy Aviles. In addition to the top bulls the event will also feature five of the Top 45 bull riders in the world, including: Paulo Crimber, Chad Venton, Tony Mendes, Clayton Foltyn and Cory Navarre.

Aviles got the idea to have the event as a way to promote the bulls he raises and as an opportunity for residents of San Benito County to witness what Aviles says is one of the fastest growing sports in America.

“It’s a pretty extreme sport,” Aviles said. “Hopping on the back of a 2,000-pound bull.”

The event was named for Mike Mason, a Hollister resident who died riding a bull several years ago. Several years ago there was another Mike Mason memorial bull riding event, but the event did not have the participation of the PBR, according to Aviles.

The idea is to make this an annual event as the kickoff to the fair. Next year Aviles would like to expand the event and make things bigger, if this year’s event is successful.

It takes a lot of money to put on a professional show, but fortunately there have been lots of sponsors who have agreed to help share the cost of the inaugural event, though Aviles declined to name his sponsors.

“You’re guaranteed to see some of the best bulls and the top contractors in the business,” Aviles said. “Alex Naccarato started in Hollister and he’s one of the most respected names in the business. Gary Leffew is a former world champion.”

As part of the extreme evening of events, intermission entertainment will be provided by the Metal Mulisha, a freestyle motocross group that performs stunts and tricks.

Tickets for the event start at $25 and are available from Ranchers Feed and Macabee Feed in San Benito County and the Boot Barn in San Martin.
