Hollister – Assemblywoman Anna Caballero, D-Salinas, who represents San Benito County, was named the League of California Cities’ “Legislator of the Year,” her office announced.

Caballero received the award Aug. 31 at the organization’s annual conference in Sacramento. About 2,000 city officials in attendance gave Caballero a standing ovation, her office reported.

The assemblywoman chairs the Assembly Committee on Local Government and serves on the Assembly Select Committee on Youth Violence.

The league commended Caballero’s efforts to preserve local control thus far in her first term as assemblywoman.

Caballero knows firsthand the inner workings of municipal government.

She served on the Salinas Planning Commission and was elected to the City Council in 1991. In 1998, Caballero was elected mayor of Salinas and remained until 2006 when she decided to run for the Assembly.
