San Juan Bautista – The 45th annual Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music will conclude Sunday with two performances at Mission San Juan Bautista.
This year’s festival – which began Aug. 3 – features five world premieres, one United States premiere and six West Coast premieres. The Mission concert includes two of those world premieres and one West Coast premiere.
The concert will open with the world premiere of “United Artists,” a piece by composer Kenneth Fuchs of the University of Connecticut. In the performance notes, Fuchs described his piece as “a bright and energetic score, celebrating the artistic power of a world-class orchestra.”
The London Symphony Orchestra has already recorded a performance of “United Artists,” but it won’t be released until 2008.
The concert will close with the world premiere of Symphony No. 4, by Kevin Puts, a guest composer at every festival since 2003. In his program notes, Puts wrote that the symphony begins with “music designed for performance within the reverberant walls of Mission San Juan Bautista” and ends with a “healing song.”
