Kite Day The seventh annual Family Kite Day will be held today from noon to 4 p.m. at Pacheco State Park, 38787 Dinosaur Point Road at the top of Pacheco Pass. Activities will include a “make your own kite” table, free face painting, pie eating contests, bubble gum blowing contests, a “candy-drop” kite, nature tables, a sun and wind table and arts and crafts. Everyone who flies a kite will receive a souvenir Kite Day button. Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats, sunscreen, drinking water, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch. Memorial Roping The 75th annual San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo will present the Memorial Roping, a new event added to the rodeo’s 2008 line-up, today beginning at 8 a.m. at the Bolado Park Fairgrounds arena. This event is dedicated to the memories of Richie Fehlman, Kenny Vierra and Tommy Carreiro. Admission is free. On Sunday, June 22, the Figure-8 Roping eliminations and the Jack Pot Roping event begin at 8 a.m., followed by the Association Barbecue at 1:30 p.m. This annual membership barbecue includes a steak dinner and fixings. Coffee will be provided; otherwise guests are encouraged to bring their own beverages. Tickets for the barbecue are $10 for adult members, $15 for adult guests and $5 for children ages 6-12 years. Gardening Faire The Monterey Bay Master Gardeners will present the third annual Smart Gardening Faire at Skypark in Scotts Valley today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This free event for home gardeners will present up-to-date knowledge about water conservation, sustainable gardening, horticulture and landscaping for both beginning and experienced gardeners. A highlight event will be the first ever Water Smart Gardening contest, sponsored by local water districts and the Monterey Bay Master Gardeners. There will also be a demonstration on composting and plant propagation as well as a marketplace of plants and garden related items, children’s activities, live music and food booths. Rodeo Parade The Downtown Rodeo Parade, the official start of the Saddle Horse Show, will be held on today beginning at 6:15 p.m. The parade traditionally features hundreds of local and visiting people, ponies and horses, as well as the past year’s queen (the 2007 Miss San Benito Rodeo Amanda Jacobsen) and the newly crowned queen. Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo The 75th annual San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo begins today at the Bolado Park Fairgrounds arena with class eliminations beginning at 8 a.m. Other events today include a western art and equipment show, the customary wine and cheese reception at 5 p.m. and the annual Elks’ Barbecue at 5 p.m. Tickets for the barbecue are $12 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 years of age and children under 6 years of age are free. Barbecue tickets will be sold at the event. The rodeo and horse show will begin at 7 p.m.
The weekend’s events include halter horses, stock horse class eliminations, a family barbecue and of course, the traditional rodeo events. Other activities include a kids’ corral at the north grandstand area, admittance to the Association Museum and a show by rodeo clown/barrelman Charlie “Too Tall” West. The annual Family Barbecue will be held Saturday, June 28 from 5-8:30 p.m. on the patio at the fairgrounds. This event includes a barbecue dinner, full bar and live entertainment by singer/songwriter J. Parsons. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 years and children under 6 years are free. Tickets are available at the door.
Ticket prices for the rodeo range from $7 for adults and $3 for children 11 years of age and younger on Friday to $10 for adults and $3 for children 11 years of age and younger Saturday and Sunday. Tickets may be obtained in advance by printing a pre-order form from the San Benito County Fairgrounds Web site and mailing it to the Saddle Horse Association. Tickets can also be purchased at Rancher’s Feed and Bolado Park. Tickets can be purchased the weekend of the rodeo beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 27. Additional costs will be charged for various barbecues and the wine and cheese reception, but many other events are free. Barbecued foods will be sold in the courtyard from noon to 7 p.m. A Founder’s Day Mass will be held in the mission church from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tickets for a barbecue dinner at 6:30 p.m. are available at the mission’s museum store. Biker Breakfast The annual Biker Breakfast, sponsored by the Hollister United Methodist Church, will be held today, and again the weekend of July 11-13 from 7 a.m. to noon at the church, located at the corners of Fifth and Monterey streets. This all-you-can-eat breakfast is open to the public and includes scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, Texas french toast, orange juice and coffee. “Pops & Rocks” “Pops & Rocks,” the annual Independence Day Festival Concert and Fireworks show hosted by Graniterock, will be held today at Graniterock’s A.R. Wilson Quarry beginning with a barbecue dinner fromt 4:30-7 p.m. Following the dinner will be a concert featuring headliner Kenny Loggins, who will perform a number of his greatest hits, including classic Loggins and Messina songs. A fireworks show will take place at sundown, followed by dancing to the Joe Sharino Band until 10:30 p.m.

Independence Day Celebration An old-fashioned 1906 Independence Day celebration will be held at Wilder Ranch State Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Docents will host picnic games such as sack races and a cake walk. Other activities include draft horse-drawn wagon rides, live old-time music and living history demonstrations of the water-powered machine shop, hand-cranked ice cream, blacksmithing and Victorian woodstove baking. Food items such as a barbecue, strawberry shortcake, root beer and lemonade will be available for purchase. A parade will be held at noon, followed by speeches and a reading of the Declaration of Independence.
