Local artists display The works of six student and alumni artists from Gavilan College are now on display through Feb. 4, 2009 at the Gavilan College Art Gallery, located in the campus library at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Themes include pride in homeland, explorations of cultural and gender identity, the subconscious, celestial abstractions and the promise of hope. Holiday Lights Train The 2008 Santa Cruz Holiday Lights Train is now open at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. The one-hour trip through downtown Santa Cruz begins at 5 p.m. Guests can ride vintage excursion cars, adorned by thousands of colorful lights, sing along to seasonal carols while sipping hot-spiced cider, listen to musical entertainment, and enjoy visits by Santa and Mrs. Claus before returning to the boardwalk. Upon returning to the Boardwalk, festivities continue at Santa’s Kingdom (inside Neptune’s Kingdom). Ticket price includes choice of indoor “Holiday” miniature golf, game tokens for the holiday arcade, or Laser Tag.
Ticket prices are $22 for adults and $17 for children ages 3-12 years of age. There is an additional $5 parking fee at the boardwalk. The train will leave the boardwalk at 5 p.m. on the following dates: Dec. 19, 20, 21 & 22.

“The Eight: Reindeer Monologues” The Paper Wing Theatre Company presents “The Eight: Reindeer Monologues” tonight at 8 p.m. at its playhouse, 320 Hoffman Ave. This dark comedy follows Santa’s reindeer and what happens when they accuse Santa of un-Christmas like behavior. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. The show will run weekends through Sunday, Dec. 21. “Christmas in the Park” Downtown San Jose’s annual Christmas in the Park holiday display is now open at Plaza de Cesar Chaves, on Market Street between San Carlos and San Fernando streets. The display will be open daily from 9 a.m. to midnight through Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009.
More than 60 musical and animated exhibits, including the 60-foot Community Giving Tree, are on display. Exhibits include the Lima Train, a Victorian Village surrounded by an animated Nutcracker suite exhibit and Santa’s House. Admission is free. Parking fees in city lots is reduced after 6 p.m. and on weekends.

Wine & Crab Taste-off The Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association will host “The Great Wine Weekend” beginning with a Winter Passport Program Saturday, Jan. 17 at participating wineries. This tasting event will be followed by the “Wine & Crab Taste-off” today from 2-5 p.m. at four Santa Cruz County restaurants – Ma Maison and Sanderlings at the Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos and Michael’s on the Main and Theo’s Restaurant in Soquel. All four restaurants will be preparing two crab dishes. Ballots for top dish and wine choices will be available at each restaurant.
