Bobby McGee Art Foundation workshops start

The Bobby McGee Art Foundation will be offering art demos, workshops, dancing and more throughout August at the Blak Sage Gallery, 727 San Benito St., in downtown Hollister. ‘Rent’ premieres on the Central Coast

Ansel Adams: Portrait of America

Ansel Adams: Portrait of America is on display at the Monterey Museum of Art-La Mirada located at 720 Via Mirada in Monterey through October. The exhibition is the first world-tour stop for the largest collection of iconic photographs to be seen in one place. Museum hours are Wednesdays-Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $5 general admission. Coyote Creek Bird Walk

Jane Haley will led a Coyote Creek Bird Walk Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. along Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill. Participants will have an opportunity to observe migratory birds as well as discover an appreciation of local birds, their habitat and ecological importance. Ohlone Lifestyle hike Park Ranger Chris Crockeet will lead the “Ohlone Lifestyle” hike, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Coyote Lake Harvey Bear County Park, 10840 Coyote Lake Road. The event includes a moderate one-mile hike through time as residents learn about how Ohlone Indians survived and thrived in the region. Along the trail, guests will see plants, animals and other things Ohlone used in their daily life. Meet at the campground overflow parking area, about 500 yards north of the ranger station. There is a $6 vehicle entrance fee, but the programs are free.

Senior Center fundraiser

The Prunedale senior center fundraiser will be hosting its annual tri-tip barbecue and bake sale, Aug. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Prunedale Senior Center, 8300 A Prunedale Road. A dinner of fresh cooked tri-tip, beans, salad and French bread is $8 and a whole tri-tip is $20. All proceeds go to the maintenance of the Prunedale Seniro Center programs. Vaquero Heritage Days

Vaquero Heritage Days will be Aug. 20-21 in San Juan Bautista inside the Mission’s Casa Maria. The first California Vaquero Show to be held on historic Mission grounds. The event will celebrate, educate and raise public awareness of the California vaquero with selected artisans, gear makers and historians exhibiting and selling their wares, sharing knowledge and skills influenced by early vaquero techniques – saddles, gears, rawhide riatas, bits, spurs, jewelry, books, fine art and more. Music in the Park

The San Benito County Arts Council, the Community Foundation of San Benito county, the California Arts Council and Centro Olin (Center for Working Artists) are sponsoring Music in the Park Aug. 21, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dunne Park, in Hollister. The event is free to the public and people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnics. Aromas Day is Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the corner of Carpenteria Road and Blohm Avenue, in Aromas. Civil War Days

The National Civil War Association and the San Benito County Historical Society is hosting Civil War Days Sept. 18 and 19, at the Tres Pinos Historical Park, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $5. Kids 9 and under are free. Parking is $3 a car. Parking is available at 8300 Airline Hwy. Visitors can watch a military trial and shooting, authentic boarding house scenario, go to school in 1863, get conscripted into the Confederate army, help the Yanks spy on the Rebels, learn how to play 1863 card games, see an 1860s blacksmith demonstration and see a period rounders baseball game.
