Aquatint etchings on display at Mission Gallery
Mission Gallery will display aquatint etchings by Stephen McMillan through Oct. 2, 106 Third St. in San Juan Bautista. The etchings are original prints pulled from copper plates that have been drawn freehand and etched with acid. Movies in the Park
The Plaza History Association presents Movies in the Park. Screenings include “Shane” on Aug. 27 and “Vertigo” on Sept. 24. The Showtime will be sunset. The event will be held at San Juan Bautista State Historic Park Plaza Lawn located at 19 Franklin St. Refreshments and snacks will be available at the Park stable. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. The will be a blanket area towards the front with a low back chair seating area toward the rear of the lawn. It is encouraged to dress warmly. For more information, call 623-4526. Preceding the movie on Aug. 27 and Sept. 24, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., there will be a range-led hike along the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. The hike is free and is two-miles long. Guests can meet at the north gate trailhead east of San Juan Bautista and should dress for warm weather on the lower elevations and cooler weather on the upper elevations. Ansel Adams: Portrait of America
Ansel Adams: Portrait of America is on display at the Monterey Museum of Art-La Mirada located at 720 Via Mirada in Monterey through October. The exhibition is the first world-tour stop for the largest collection of iconic photographs to be seen in one place. Museum hours are Wednesdays-Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $5 general admission. Teen Challenge Rally The Hollister Angels Youth Ministry will host its second annual Teen Challenge Rally, “Overcoming,” Aug. 28, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Gym, 680 College St., in Hollister. Artist reception at Galeria Tonantzin
Galeria Tonantzin will host an artist’s reception for Judith Ogus, who will have her artwork on display in September, Aug. 28, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., 115 Third St., in San Juan Bautista. Ogus’ exhibit, “The Cancer Frog Blog,” includes a mix of emotions, education and cartoons of her journey through cancer. El Teatro performs ‘Popol Vuh’
El Teatro Campesino will present free performances of a workshop production, “Popol Vuh: The Story of Seven Macaw,” in different locations in San Juan Bautista. The orginal musical is an adaptation based on the sacred creation book of the Quiche Maya. The play is a work in progress, funded by the James Irvine Foundation, and will continue to be developed over the next two years. It is directed by Lakin Valdez. SJB historical society hosts author
The San Juan Bautista Historical Society in collaboration with the Plaza History Association will host author John Boessenecker at their Sept. 4 quarterly meeting. Boessenecker will be available to sign his book, “Bandido: The Life and Times of Tiburcio Vasquez.” Guests can pre-order the book and RSVP for Mansmith’s Barbecue. The event will take place at the Grassy Park, at the corner of Second and Washington streets. The gathering will begin at 11 a.m., with a book signing for those who preorder books. Lunch is at 11:45 a.m. and includes tri tip and potato salad for $15. Boessenecker will discuss his book at 12:15 p.m, with a question and answer period to follow. The 49th annual Great Sand Castle Contest will be held at Carmel Beach, between 10th and 12th, Oct. 3. The event is cosponsored by the American Institute of Architects- Monterey Bay Chapter and the city of Carmel-by-the-sea. The theme will be announced two weeks before the event. Registration takes place on the beach before the event, and builders can begin work on their castles at 8 a.m. Judging will take place from noon to 2 p.m.
