The Hollister United Methodist Church is hosting two events Aug.
15, starting with an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon.
The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, orange
juice and coffee. The cost is $9 for adults and $6 for kids 12 and
under. Late in the day, there will be a ’50s Sock Hop Dance from 5
p.m. to 9 p.m. Guests are invited to dress in 1950s garb if
desired. Guests can feast on root beer floats, hot dogs, and chips.
Steven Sladon will serve as DJ. Tickets are $5 for adults or $2.50
for kids ages 12 and under. Both events will be hosted at the

‘Sam Burguesa’ continues

‘Seussical’ continues

Hollister Street Festival

The 23rd Annual Hollister Street Festival is Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Hollister. The event will feature a classic car show, food booths, arts and crafts and entertainment. This year there will also be a dunk tank in the carnival game area and two of the volunteers to take a splash include Mayor Eugenia Sanchez and Ed the mailman. Dance or music class free

West Coast Dance FX will offer a chance for residents to try out a dance or music class for free Aug. 15. Classes are available for all ages starting 3 through adult. Classes begin at noon and run all day. Dance classes are available in ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, theater and zumba. Music classes are available in guitar, piano, voice, theater and band instruments. Guerra summer concerts

Garden Railway Tour

The South County Garden Railroaders will be hosting their annual Garden Railway Tour Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will benefit St. Joseph’s Family Center in Gilroy and the Community Food Bank in Hollister with a food drive. The tour includes 11 model railroads running through backyard gardens in Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister. To pick up a guide book, participants are asked to make a donation of nonperishable food, cash or check that will go to the food banks. Rock Soup hike

Christopher Crockett, a senior park ranger with at Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park, will be leading a hike Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon called “Rock Soup.” The hike will include a discussion of the rocks in the park and landforms associated with the strike-slip Calaveras Fault that runs through the park. Those who would like to participate can meet at the Mendoza Ranch parking area on Roop Road, east of Gilroy by 8:45 a.m. The hike will be 3.5 miles along the Coyote Ridge and Mendoza trails. Movie matinees begin

The San Benito County Free Library will be hosting movie matinees for teens at the library Tuesdays through August 25 at 2 p.m. For more information, call Kelly at 636-4107, ext. 20. Outdoor movie series continues

“Twilight” Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is an ordinary teenager when she finds herself in an extraordinary relationship after moving to a sleepy Washington town with her father. She finds herself attracted to the gorgeous Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), but there is something about him that isn’t quite right – he’s a vampire. Baler Summer Nights

The Baler Backers Athletic Organization is hosting the second annual Baler Summer Nights Aug. 22 at the Bolado Park Pavilion. Tickets are $65 per seat or $500 for a table for eight. The event includes a dinner, dance, no-host bar, silent and live auction, raffles and more. Ticket sales, sponsorship reservations and donation collection have started. The event raises money for the 23 athletic programs on campus that service more than 740 student athletes. Drive-thru chicken barbecue

Pet Friends will be hosting a drive-thru barbecue Sunday, Aug. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pet Friends Center, 2975 Buena Vista Road. Charity Golf Classic

Communications Unlimited and the Hollister community are partnering with local businesses to raise money for three charities, including Standing in the Gap-Now, Compassion Pregnancy and Emmaus House. The Charity Golf Classic will be held Aug. 28, at the Diablo Golf Course at Ridgemark with $2,500 in prizes. It will include a barbecue lunch, games and entertainment followed by an evening dinner and dance. Tickets are $150 for all events, or $500 for four. Movies in the Park The San Juan Bautista Historic Park Plaza Lawn will be the venue for a screening of the 1959 Western “Rio Bravo” staring John Wayne, Dean Martin and Claude Akins. The movie tells the tale of a sheriff of a small town who has to keep custody of a powerful rancher’s brother. The viewing is free to the public. The event starts at 8:15 p.m. with a special presentation, followed by the movie at 8:30 p.m. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Blankets and warm clothing is suggested.

Aromas Day

Aromas Day is Aug. 30 and will start with a country-style breakfast buffet at the grange from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The street fair is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the parade starts at 2 p.m. The event includes music, food booths, original art and more. For children, there will be a petting zoo, pony rides, a dunk tank and a climbing wall. From Hwy. 101, take Hwy. 129 and turn left on Rogge.

Historical society walking tour

The San Juan Bautista Historical Society will host a walking tour of the mission presented by Fr. Ed and Ruben Mendoza. Participants are asked to meet at the Mission grounds at 10:45 a.m.. The tour of the grounds and mission archive will start at 11 a.m. and continue until 12:30 p.m. The tour will be followed by a barbecue in the olive grove by the Vaccarezza family. Master gardens tour

The Monterey Bay Master Gardeners will hold its annual tour Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theme this year is “Garden Sanctuaries of the Monterey Peninsula.” The self-guided tour features nine private gardens, including cottage gardens, wooded coastal landscapes and historic sites. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance at most garden nurseries in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, or online at www.montereybaymastergardeners.org. The tour will include short lectures at each site, a plant, book and art sale, and a raffle.
