Ranger-led hikes along the Anza Trail

Guests can join rangers for hikes along the Anza Trail Aug. 26 and Sept. 30. The hikes begin near Old Stage Coach Road at 6 p.m. Hikers should dress in layers as the trail’s location is influenced by afternoon winds. It may be warmer in lower elevations and then cooler above. Please drink water and wear hiking or tennis shoes with good tread. The hike is scheduled early enough so that participants can enjoy the free summer movie series at the San Juan Bautista School soccer field and/or enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. The program is presented in partnership between the National Park Service, Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail and California State Park San Juan Bautista Historic Park. Hispanic Women in Action Reception

The Hispanic Women in Action Reception, hosted by the League of United Latin American Citizens San Benito County, will be Aug. 27, at 6 p.m., at the Cedar House, 7511 Pacheco Pass Road, in Hollister. The keynote speaker for the annual scholarship fundraiser is Carmelita Garcia, mayor of Pacific Grove. The 2011 LULAC Woman of the Year recipient, Cecilia Preciado Burciaga, will also be honored. Jacob’s Ladder flea market

Jacob’s Ladder Ministries will host a flea market Aug. 27, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 1515 Santa Ana Road, in Hollister. It will have lots of goods and vendors. Spaces are available for vendors.

Growing cool season vegetables workshop

The Master Gardeners of SSC will offer a free workshop on growing cool season vegetables at the South County Demonstration Garden, Aug. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon, 9400 No Name Uno, in Gilroy. Master gardener Joan Cloutier will lead the workshop, with a lecture in the boardroom of St. Louise Regional Hospital, followed by a demonstration in the garden located at the rear of the hospital.

‘The Goat or Who is Sylvia’

The Paper Wing Theatre Company will perform “The Goat or Who is Sylvia,” through Sept. 3, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission. Metropolitan Opera performs

Monterey Opera presents “Arias in August,” with the Metropolitan Opera Contralto performing Aug. 20, at 7:30 p.m., at the Golden State Theatre, 417 Alvarado St., in downtown Monterey. Admission is free though donations by check or cash will be accepted in the theater lobby. Seating is limited and guests can call for reservations. Evenings by the Bay

The Monterey Jazz Festival and the Monterey Bay Aquarium present “Evenings by the Bay,” a summer concert series. The performances are Saturday and Sunday evenings, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Gallery, through Sept. 4. All concerts are included with the price of admission to the Aquarium. Multiple shows open at Monterey Museum

The Monterey Museum of Art has several shows on display, including “The Art of California, 1880 to present,” “Adams & Weston and the masters of California Photography, “California Artists and Portraiture,” and more. The museum has locations at 559 Pacific St. and 720 Via Mirada. It is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for students and military and children under 12 are free. Aromas Day

Aromas Day is Aug. 28 and will start with a country breakfast and silent auction, from 7 to 11 a.m., at the Aromas Grange, at the corner of Rose and Bardue streets. A parade will be held at 2 p.m. and there will be Art in the Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., presented by the Aromas Hills Artisans. An all-day street fair will include live music, classic cars, antique tractors, a climbing wall, a petting zoo and pony rides, a dunk tank and more. Historical Society meeting

The San Benito County Historical Society will host a general membership meeting Aug. 31, at 7 p.m., at the Historical Society Museum, on Fifth Street in Hollister. The meeting will include minutes, a treasurer’s report, introduction of board members, a society update, a vote on approval of amended by-laws and a program. Refreshments will be served. ‘Popol Vuh’

El Teatro Campesino presents “Popol Vuh: Part 3: The Magic Twins,” as well as a reprise of “Part 1: Heart of Heaven” and “Part 2: Seven Macaw.” The third part will run Sept. 1-3, 4-5, 8-25, at the El Teatro Campesino Playhouse. Alasdair Fraser’s fiddling school concert

Alasdair Frazer’s Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School will perform Sept. 2, at 8 p.m., at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church St., in Santa Cruz. Henry Coe events set

Henry W. Coe State Park will host a rangers program at the headquarters for kids ages 7-12, Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. The topics include animals of the park, geology, mapping and orientation and more. Meet outside the visitor’s center. That same evening Don Savant will host a weekend music event with an interactive folk style music event for families and kids, with special guests the Bees Knees. The event is at 7 p.m. Guests can also take a guided tour of the Gilroy Hot Springs at 10 a.m. The guide will walk visitors around the site, which is normally closed to the public and share stories of the landmark that served as a resort and later as a readjustment location for Japanese families returning from WWII internment camps. Living History Days

The San Juan State Historic Park will host Living History Days Sept. 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet mountain men, Civil War soldiers, Victorian ladies and more. ‘Beowulf’

White dove release

Central Coast Dove and the Hollister Veterans Post 9242 will host a Sept. 11 memorial at the Hollister Veterans Building, 649 San Benito St., in Hollister. The memorial begins at 11:30 a.m. with a dove release at noon. The event will feature the pledge of allegiance led by a Boy Scout troop, the national anthem, a prayer led by the Rev. Ardyss Golden, speakers from the fire department, the police department, the Red Cross and a rifle salute and taps by the VFW with “Amazing Grace” played on the bag pipes. The event is one of many being held by the National White Dove Release Society. And White Wings Over America. Suicide Prevention Service of the Central Coast is hosting the fifth annual Costal Trail Walk Sept. 17, with registration from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The walk will begin at 10 a.m., followed by raffle prizes and souvenirs for the walkers. Suicide Prevention Service provides 24-hour, free, confidential and bilingual suicide crisis lines for the community, as well as free educational materials, youth presentations and community trainings.
