Featured artist for Gallery Walk

Don Heitkotter will be the featured artist at this month’s gallery walk July 11 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The artist’s reception is 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 107 C The Alameda in San Juan Bautista. The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center will host a bird walk July 11, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. along Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill. Participants will have a chance to observe migratory birds as well as discover an appreciation of local birds. Due to the terrain, these walks are not recommended for young children. ‘The Art of Children’s Books’

The Monterey Museum of Art La Mirada presents “Over Rainbows and Down Rabbit Holes: The Art of Children’s Books” July 11 through September 13, 720 Via Mirada in Monterey. The show will feature 70 original illustrations from well-known children’s books. Classics in the exhibition include “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter, “The House at Pooh Corner” by A.A. Milne and illustrated by Earnest Shepard, and more. On July 11, there will be a storybook making activity from noon to 3 p.m. and free admission from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a storybook time every Saturday at 2 p.m. while the show is on display. Regular admission is $5, $2.50 for students and military, free to MMA members, children under 12 NARM and AAM members. Downtown movie series

‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ is the latest in the downtown movie series. Professor Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) is obsessed with the idea that there is a lost world at the center of the earth. When he and his nephew Sean (Josh Hutcherson) travel to Iceland to research some mysterious quakes they find themselves lost in just such a world with their guide Hannah (Anita Briem). But now that Trevor has made his discovery, how will they find their way out? The show is set for Thursday after 9 p.m. at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. Admission is free. Come for a free two-mile guided moderate hike near the historic town of San Juan Bautista July 18 and 25. Participants will learn about local history and enjoy a leisurely hike through the gently rolling oak woodland hillside. The event will be held from 10 am to 1 pm. If interested in participating, meet the park ranger at the trailhead (North Gate) at the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail and call Michelle Armijo at San Juan Bautista State Historic Park with any questions, 623-4881. Movies in the Park

The San Juan Bautista Historic Park is hosting a movie series in the park once a month through August. The next showing is “Wagonmaster” on July 24. John Ford directed this 1950 Western about a group of Mormons who are trying to found a new colony in San Juan River country with the help of horse traders Travis (Ben Johnson) and Sandy (Harry Carey Jr.) as their guides and wagon master. Movies start at 8:30 p.m. A short presentation on the history of San Juan or related to the movie will start at 8:15 p.m. The viewing is free to the public, and any proceeds will benefit the Plaza History Association. Strawberry Festival The Strawberry Festival will take place from 10 am to 7 pm Aug 1 and 2 in downtown Watsonville. Monterey Bay Berry Festival

Come and enjoy various berries at the celebration of the “new” Monterey Bay Berry Festival Aug. 1 and 2. The two-day festival will be held from 10 am to 9 pm. There will be live concerts, arts and crafts, the berry carnival, Arabian horses, and much more. The berry carnival closes at 11 p.m. on Saturday and 10 p.m. on Sunday. On-site parking will be $2, and general admission is $6 and $3 for children between the ages of 3-10. Half-price advance carnival tickets are available at the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, 449 Union St., Watsonville, through July 31.
