‘The Art of Children’s Books’
The Monterey Museum of Art La Mirada presents “Over Rainbows and Down Rabbit Holes: The Art of Children’s Books” through September 13, 720 Via Mirada in Monterey. The show will feature 70 original illustrations from well-known children’s books. Classics in the exhibition include “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter. There will be a storybook time every Saturday at 2 p.m. will the show is on display. Regular admission is $5, $2.50 for students and military, free to MMA members, children under 12 NARM and AAM members. Scholarship fundraiser
The Teressie White Memorial Scholarship Foundation – with Doris Gerber, local founder of the Watsonville Elks parking lot sales – will be holding a benefit parking lot sale Aug. 1. Fifty spaces are available at the Aromas Grange, at the corner of Bardue and Rose. Space rental proceeds benefit the Teressie White Memorial Scholarship Foundation that gives scholarships to deserving local kids. Spaces: 12 x 12 (outside) for $20 or 8 x 8 (inside) for $25. Watsonville Strawberry Festival
The Strawberry Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug 1 and 2 in downtown Watsonville. Come and enjoy live music, and the highlight of the festival, “Strawberry Lane.” This features a variety of treats in which strawberries, provided by local growers, are the main ingredient. Monterey Bay Berry Festival
Come and enjoy various berries at the celebration of the “new” Monterey Bay Berry Festival Aug. 1 and 2. The two-day festival will be held from 10 am to 9 pm. There will be live concerts, arts and crafts, the berry carnival, Arabian horses, and much more. The berry carnival closes at 11 p.m. on Saturday and 10 p.m. on Sunday. On-site parking will be $2, and general admission is $6 and $3 for children between the ages of 3-10. Half-price advance carnival tickets are available at the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, 449 Union St., Watsonville, through July 31. Two-day family passes for two adults and two children are $20 and are also available at the Chamber office or at the gate. Vacation Bible School starts

Downtown movie series
In E.T. Extra-Terristerial, a 1982 classic directed by Steven Spielberg, three children (Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton and a very young Drew Barrymore) of a single mom bond together when the middle son, Elliott (Thomas), finds an extraterrestrial living in their shed. E.T. is a gentle alien who just wants to find a way to get back home. The show is set for Thursday after 9 p.m. at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. Admission is free. Baler Summer Nights
The Baler Backers Athletic Organization is hosting the second annual Baler Summer Nights Aug. 22 at the Bolado Park Pavilion. Tickets are $65 per seat or $500 for a table for eight. The event includes a dinner, dance, no-host bar, silent and live auction, raffles and more. Ticket sales, sponsorship reservations and donation collection have started. The event raises money for the 23 athletic programs on campus that service more than 740 student athletes. Drive-thru chicken barbecue
Pet Friends will be hosting a drive-thru barbecue Sunday, Aug. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pet Friends Center, 2975 Buena Vista Road. Charity Golf Classic
Communications Unlimited and the Hollister community are partnering with local businesses to raise money for three charities, including Standing in the Gap-Now, Compassion Pregnancy and Emmaus House. The Charity Golf Classic will be held Aug. 28, at the Diablo Golf Course at Ridgemark with $2,500 in prizes. It will include a barbecue lunch, games and entertainment followed by an evening dinner and dance. Tickets are $150 for all events, or $500 for four.
