Living Under the Trees
The San Benito County Free Library, 470 Fifth St., will host an art reception and community forum today from 6 p.m. to 9 pm. for pieces that have been on display at the library since Feb. 2 and will continue to show through March 14. The exhibit is entitled “Living Under the Trees: Indigenous Mexican Farmworkers in California,” by David Bacon, an award-winning journalist and documentary photographer. The show was produced in partnership with California Rural Legal Assistance and the Binational Front of Indigenous Organizations. For more information, call 636-4107.

Bach to Blues Tribute
The 2009 Bach to Blues event will pay tribute to Gilroy’s great jazz vocalist Ivie Anderson. Anderson was born in Gilroy and was a popular singer with Duke Ellington’s orchestra. Bach to Blues showcases regional talent, featuring Gavilan College faculty, students and performers from the community. Some of this year’s performers include Maria Amirkhanian, John Garcia, Nate Pruitt and more. Tickets are $30 for VIP seating, $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors or students. Tickets are on sale at the Hollister Gavilan site. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., in Gilroy.

Early California
The Plaza History Association will be hosting a day of history at the San Juan Bautista State Historic Park on Second Street, between Washington and Mariposa streets. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., characters will be dressed in early California costumes as mountain men, civil war soldiers, Victorian ladies and gentlemen and much more. Cooking and craft demonstrations will be held as well as games of cards and old-fashioned sodas in the saloon. Adults are $2, children under 16 are free. For more information, call 623-4881.
“La Virgen del Tepeyac” The GAV TV Productions and El Teatro Campesino will present a premiere screening of the video documentary “La Virgen del Tepeyac” tonight at the El Teatro Campesino Playhouse, 705 Fourth St. in San Juan Bautista. The video will show the performance in Mission San Juan Bautista in 2008.

Rock benefit
The San Benito High School Rock Guitar Club will host the 5th annual Benefit Concert in the high school auditorium from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. tonight. Performances will include The Task Come Back, Bear and Bull Fights, Fugu, Inevitably Spicy, Enduring the Sun, The Dark Horse Battalion, Exhibit A, BEEFTONE and Eleonora. It will also feature a drawing for a 60-inch Mitsubishi flat screen television with the winner announced at the end of the concert. All proceeds benefit the Community Pantry of San Benito County. Tickets are $10 each and are available from guitar club members and at the student payment center on campus.

Circle of Reflection
The Hollister Japanese Temple Garden will be hosting a Circle of Reflection Tea Ceremony today at 1 p.m. at 920 Riverside Road, in Hollister. Minako Tsuji, a professor, will demonstrate the tea ceremony under the cherry blossoms, followed by a meditation ceremony led by Don Belt. Tsuji is a graduate of Kyoto Women University and when she was in Kyoto she learned the tea ceremony of Urasenke. She received a tea teaching diploma in Junkyo in 1997, Chamei in 1981 and Kyoju in 2008. She started teaching tea ceremony at Hakone Garden in 1985, and teaches it every Friday and Saturday. Rotary scholarship fundraiser
The Hollister rotary is hosting a community take-out BBQ as a fundraiser for their scholarship programs. The barbecue includes a whole seasoned tri-tip and loaf of garlic bread for $25. Pickup will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the 400 block of San Benito Street, near the Briggs Building. Tickets are available from any Rotary member. Aladdin Jr The San Benito Stage Company presents Aladdin Jr starting today through May 10 at the Granada Theater. Friday and Saturday performances at 7 p.m. with matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available at PostNet or by calling 524-6667.
