El Teatro musical cabaret

El Teatro Campesino presents a teatro lab production, “Sam Burguesa and the Pixie Chicks.” The show is from the exploratory “Teatro Lab,” a branch of El Teatro that allows the next generation to create shows. The show mixes music, myths, magic and politics as it follows Chicano slacker Sam who has lost his home, his money and his marbles. Performances run through May 31 at the El Teatro Campesino Playhouse, 705 Fourth St., in San Juan Bautista. Performances will be Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 May 8-10, and for Thursday performances. Meet the artist at Mission Gallery

Artist Stephen McMillan will demonstrate inking and pulling multiple plate, color prints on an etching press May 16 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mission Gallery, 106 Third St., in San Juan Bautista. McMillan’s work include aquatint etchings that will be on display at the Mission Gallery through June 7. Downtown movie series launches

The movies under the stars series starts May 28 a half an hour after dusk with its premiere screening on the grassy lot on the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. Leadership San Benito County is hosting a ’50s Sock Hop to raise money for Jovenes de Antano senior programs May 30, from 5 p.m. to midnight. The event will include a ’50s costume contest, raffle, dinner and a dessert bar. No-host cocktails at 5 p.m., dinner and program at 6 p.m. and dancing from 7 p.m. to midnight. Live music by “Come Back Buddy.” Tickets are $50 per person, $30 for those 65 and over. Dog Days of Hollister

The Hollister Dog Owners Group will be hosting the Dog Days of Hollister May 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Dunne Park, West and Sixth streets. Well-behaved dogs over 6 months of age and their owners are invited to attend. Dogs should be on a leash at all times and have proof of a current rabies vaccination. Children under 12 or free. There is a $3 entrance fee for adults, $2 with donation of dog food. The event will include vendors and rescue groups, as well as a pooch parade, a costumer contest and other dog contest. San Benito Oriana Chorale spring concerts

The San Benito Oriana Chorale is hosting two spring concerts Saturday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 2300 Airline Hwy. The Portuguese Society of the Holy Ghost will host its annual festival May 30 and 31. There will be a dance and presentation of the new queen May 30 at 9 p.m. at the Portuguese Hall, 6957 Seventh St. Sunday May 31, at 10 a.m., there will be a parade of queens that will leave the hall at 10 a.m. to process to Sacred Heart Church, for mass at 11 a.m. and afternoon festivities that include an auction, dance and the serving of traditional Portuguese sopas.

Jeanie Watson art show

Jeanie Watson will have her artwork on display June 1 to June 27 at the Galeria Tonantzin, 115 Third St. in San Juan Bautista. She will be on hand during the gallery walk June 13, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the artists’ reception. Watson’s work includes acrylic on canvas and watercolor paintings.

‘3 Stories Tall’

Kirk Ward, a Hollister native who is living and working in Los Angeles, will return to San Benito to perform his one-man show “3 Stories Tall” at the El Teatro Campesino Playhouse in San Juan Bautista June 11-28. Performances will be Thursday – Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets for Thursday performances are $10 each. Tickets for other shows are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students and $12 for children under 12. Ward has performed the show at the HBO Theatre, The Comedy Central Theatre and The Aspen Comedy Festival. It uses drama and humor to reveal the adversity every young man and woman experiences when taking the path of the unknown. The Leadership San Benito Class of 2009 is hosting a Wag n’ Walk 5K Family Fun Run and Walk June 13 at the Graniterock Southside Sand and Gravel Quarry at 5632 Airline Hwy. The 5K starts at 9 a.m. and is open to two-legged participants. A 5K walk for people and their pets starts at 9:45 a.m. Individual registration is $15 in advance or $20 at the event. Pinnacles Partnership picnic

The Pinnacles Partnership will host its third annual picnic June 20. The event will include docent-led nature walks, birding expeditions, a barbecue from noon to 2 p.m., with a program from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., a star party at dusk and children’s activities all day. Overnight lodging is available. There is limited availability to visit the RS Bar Guest Ranch where a pair of California condors are carry for a hatchling. Tours are limited to 30 people total, and depart at 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Cost for members is $25 for condor viewing, but the barbecue and other events are free.
