The Fresno Metropolitan Museum presents a special exhibition entitled “The Epic Landscape of California: Paintings, Prints, and Photographs” from its permanent collection currently on view through Aug. 24.
This exhibition features 40 works in photograph, print and painting form, each depicting the majesty and power of California scenery.
This group of paintings, watercolors, and photographs highlight the relationship between art and nature, the aesthetic quality of the natural world, and the importance of the scientific principals used to record and capture the beauty and wonder of the natural world.
California in the 1800’s served as an attraction for artists. Its wilderness and enjoyable climate served as the ideal environment to create their art.
Although much of its natural beauty remain today, the gradual disappearance compels many to treasure its beauty. The state is fortunate that the California landscape artists recorded the virgin wilderness forgenerations to cherish.
Artists and photographers represented in this exhibition include Albert Bierstadt, Sidney Tilden Daken, Maynard Dixon, Thomas Hill and Charles Reirson, among many others.
But the one artist whose work is recieving special attention is Ansel Adams.
Throughout his adult life, Ansel Adams remained a teacher, writer, and an enduring presence in professional photography. Through his groundbreaking work in landscape photography, Adams extended the long-standing tradition of innovative documents.
For Adams, the sense of wonder and the grandeur of nature were inspirational. Arguably the country’s best-known photographer.
