Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and the Santa Clara County celebrated the opening of the Route 85/U.S. 101 (South) Interchange Project north of Morgan Hill with a ribbon cutting Monday morning.
“VTA and the County of Santa Clara are committed not only to keep freeway traffic on the freeway system to reduce congestion on local streets, but also to improve traffic flow by creating smarter alternatives to encourage carpooling,” said Don Gage, VTA board chairperson and county supervisor.
This is the first interchange in the county to feature ramps directly connecting one carpool lane to another.
The final project cost was $66.8 million, including $41.8 million from 1996 Measure B local sales tax funding and $25 million from the State Traffic Congestion Relief Program funding.
The project also widened the highway between Metcalf and Cochrane roads and between Bernal and Metcalf roads.
