Not much bang in CBS’ ‘Theory’

I’ve watched two episodes of “The Big Bang Theory” now and I haven’t laughed once. I haven’t even cracked a smile. The feeling I get when I’m watching the show is almost the same as how I felt when my appendix burst when I was in ninth grade.

Trust me. The show is that bad.

It has a simple premise. A hot chick moves across the hall from two nerdy physicists and turns their world around. The two roommates are Leonard and Sheldon, and the hot chick is Penny.

Johnny Galecki is Leonard. Of the two roommates he’s the one who falls hard for Penny. He was funny on “Roseanne” and he is the more likeable of the two leads. Jim Parsons is Sheldon and he’s the wise guy of the two, always cracking jokes. Unlike Leonard, he knows he’s a nerd and is comfortable with himself. He doesn’t have any hopes going out with Penny.

Kaley Cuoco is Penny. She’s a struggling actress who works at The Cheesecake Factory. So far her character is not very developed. She is just hot. The writers have focused more on the two male characters.

I like Kaley Cuoco. I thought she was good on “8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter” and also on “Charmed.” I wish the writers would do more with her character. It’s easy to see why Leonard is physically attracted to her, but her character is so bland I think he would give up on her after a few minutes. But if he did that, then there wouldn’t be a show.

Leonard and Sheldon have two friends who they hang out with all the time. There is the Indian nerd played by Kunal Nayyar. I don’t know how the actor speaks in real life, but on the show he talks with an exaggerated Indian accent. The other friend is Wolowitz and Simon Helberg plays him.

Wolowitz is the funniest part of the show. Out of the four he has the most experience with women. He’s kind of like a nerdy Larry Dallas from “Three’s Company.” He has a pageboy haircut and looks like Waldo from “Where’s Waldo.” The writers should get rid of Sheldon and make Wolowitz Leonard’s roommate. They could play off of each other because Leonard is shy around women and Wolowitz thinks he’s a ladies man.

The show was created by Chuck Lorre (no relation to Peter Lorre) who also created “Two and a Half Men,” “Dharma and Greg,” “Cybill” and wrote for the “Roseanne” show. So he’s got the writing chops to make a great series, but I think he’s finally run out of gas.

It is funny to hear the canned laugh track after watching shows such as “30 Rock” and “The Office.” Even the canned laughter can’t help bring a chuckle when watching this show.

The show’s main problem is that it’s trying to be too smart. I’ll admit there are some things they are talking about that I don’t understand. The nerd characters speak like they are in a Merchant Ivory movie. They use big words and they both have annoying voices.

The writers need to dumb it down a little bit. The show would be perfect on the FOX network, but it doesn’t fit into the CBS mold. I think the show should be more sex jokes and funny situations like a nerdy version of “Three’s Company.”

I like intelligent writing such as the first two seasons of “The Office” and “Cheers”, but the show doesn’t have any comedy. Even the most intelligent writing can’t save a show that doesn’t have any laughs.

It’s sad that this comes from the same network that brought us “All In The Family,” “M*A*S*H”, “Newhart” and “The Honeymooners.”
