A screenwriter in the making
I always wonder what sort of shows I would broadcast if I had my
own network. When I’m driving or I just have time to think I like
to come up with outlines for TV shows that I want to watch. I’ve
come up with dozens of ideas for movies and TV shows and since I’m
waiting for the new TV season to premiere, I thought I would share
some of them.
A screenwriter in the making
I always wonder what sort of shows I would broadcast if I had my own network. When I’m driving or I just have time to think I like to come up with outlines for TV shows that I want to watch. I’ve come up with dozens of ideas for movies and TV shows and since I’m waiting for the new TV season to premiere, I thought I would share some of them.
Some are good and some are bad; most are crime dramas because that’s what I like to watch. So here are my ideas. A few years from now if you’re watching TV and you see any of these shows, please let me know because someone is going to owe me some money.
Cadaver Dog – Jack Sway and his dog Dusty, who is trained to sniff out cadavers, travel around the state to help the FBI find missing people.
Cooking with Grandma – I lived with my girlfriend’s grandmother for three years and she would not let anyone use the kitchen. No matter what time of day it was, she would be in there. If I tried to eat a bowl of cereal at 3 a.m. she would pop out of nowhere to disrupt me. She liked to hide pots and pans. She would stick her fingers in others’ food and no matter what was being cooked, she added salt. Making a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich could be a two-hour ordeal. So I propose a reality show where top chefs come in and must prepare a meal in 30 minutes with Grandma hanging out in the kitchen.
Dog Days – This is a live action kids show about two dogs who are private investigators. The lead dog is a Tibetan terrier named Dusty and his sidekick is a little Jack Russell terrier named Shivers. Together they find lost or missing dogs and tangle with Cody, the bulldog down the street. Dusty’s love interest is a shi tzu named Joey. Their nemesis is the dogcatcher Mr. Wan.
Lighthouse Daily – Tom Carpenter is a widower who lives in a small New England Coastal town and runs a newspaper from a lighthouse. The show would focus on his coping with the death of his wife and the small town’s inhabitants.
The Nightman – Dr. Morbid is a horror movie TV host in Seattle who battles real monsters and demons while not in the studio. At one point I had Dr. Morbid as either a vampire or werewolf, but then I changed it so he is normal, but his crew is not. His producer is a female vampire named Ava and the cameraman is a werewolf named Bela. I also wanted him to fight current day horror icons such as Freddy Krueger, Jason and Michael Myers.
SAR – SAR (Search and Rescue) focuses on a Coast Guard rescue station in Sitka, Alaska. It’s sort of like “Rescue Me” but with a Coast Guard backdrop. It will deal with how members handle search and rescue missions and how they cope with the boredom of being on a small island.
Scoop McCain – Scoop McCain is a tough crime reporter for the Boston Bulletin. He grew up in Boston’s gritty Southie neighborhood and knows all the city’s gangsters, criminals and cops. I think Ed Burns would be perfect as Scoop McCain, or even Donnie Wahlberg would be good.
Scudder – Matthew Scudder is an alcoholic ex-cop who works as a private detective in New York City. He lives in a run down hotel and his only friend is an Irish gangster named Mick Ballou. If this sounds familiar it’s because it’s based on a series of novels by Lawrence Block. I think that it would make a great TV show. David Caruso would make an excellent Scudder.
Vampire City – In this series, vampires have taken over the world. During the day people go about their business, but no one goes out at night. There are no more animals because the vampires have eaten them all. A vampire named Brasov has kidnapped a little girl and her father John Ford teams up with a lady vampire named Misty to track her down. The whole series is her father trying to find his daughter. I would like Nicole Kidman to play Misty.
So there are some of my ideas. They might not appeal to everyone, but they can’t be any worse than some of the stuff they have on TV right now.
