Did you hear the one about the City Council in a small
landlocked city near the Central Coast? It goes like this. The City
Council (motto, Who, me?) is facing fiscal problems, so what do
they do? They fire the best fire chief they could ever hope to
hire, they axe a police sergeant position, end up having to give a
pink slip to a bright up-and-coming ‘female’ police officer and a
police administrative position.

I thought it was funny too until I realized that this was no joke! These clowns in city hall actually did it! This is the city with lots of bikers on July 4, a growing gang problem, only one fire station for over 30,000 citizens (and a high fire insurance premium on your casa because of it!) and barely any shopping.

What were they thinking?

Just like all city councils, they were thinking that by eliminating public safety positions they would garner support for future fees and taxes from their doting public. They conveniently forget that the government was created to create laws and protect the public.

That being the case, why do they lacerate the safety net of the police and fire protection? The answer is simple. The City Council is punishing you irresponsible members of the public for being so stupid that you vote down new taxes! Mark my words: In no time flat there will be some sort of initiative to raise taxes and fees to allow for public safety. It is laughable because it is so predictable.

I thought Scattini was a lawman. He should understand the need for public safety, shouldn’t he? Did he raise his voice to protect these vital public safety jobs?

What needs to happen is that everyone with a lick of sense should be at the next Hollister City Council meeting demanding to be protected from the council!

They don’t give a whit about you, your families, your neighbors or the city. What they do care about is getting elected and lining their pockets with developers money.

Demand accountability! Demand public safety! Demand answers!”

“Loved the letter about the ‘Stupid-visors.’ That was classic.

Pat Loe is just as equally bad as Rita Bowling. And lame duck Bobbie Cruz is the biggest whipping boy yet. What is really funny is Richard Scagliotti’s exit of District 1. If only Ruth Kessler would give it up that easy. She’s been on the board since when? 1923? She’s like the Strom Thurman of San Benito County.

If politics in this county were any funnier, it might even beat out the local ‘so-called-publisher/editors’ of our county! Woo-hoo! What next, another self-promoting editorial about San Benito County ‘rights and wrongs’ as seen from the high horse of the out-of-town transplant ‘rag-pushers.’ Yee-haw!

My head’s spinning from that bull ride! Where’s Richard Scagliotti and that brain-sized belt-buckle anyway? Behind the scenes funding the newest media? God-Knows-What-News-Source? Ripley wouldn’t even believe it. Or does he?”

“That the first 2004 baby article was a soft human interest story is no excuse for lax writing or editing. The last paragraph is most sadly put together. This is a classic example of how far our language arts have deteriorated.

Other less than optimum wordsmanship appears regularly in the Free Lance, but I simply had to comment on this blatant pronoun misusage: ‘Both her and Echevarria… plan on raising the baby in Hollister.’ Clearly it should be SHE and Echevarria.

We cannot let the verbal massacre of our language be compounded by allowing it to appear in print. Does it really matter? Absolutely. More now than ever.”
