Bob Cruz, county supervisor, voted not to fund the Gray Davis
recall which will be refunded to the county by the state of
California.
How much were the attorney fees he approved to be paid out of
the General Fund to circumvent the growth initiative to go on the
March 2004 ballot? This cost to the taxpayer will not be reimbursed
by the state of California.

“The negative comments about San Benito Foods in your editorial and by your publisher were upsetting to me.

The Free Lance should be encouraging business development within San Benito County. The relocation of the cannery in this area may never happen due to the high cost of development.

If San Benito Foods ever did re-locate, they would probably move to the San Joaquin Valley to be closer to their product source.

That will be a sad day for Hollister.”

“I’ve lived in Hollister for about 64 years and remember when there was two canneries, the then Fairview Cannery and what was referred to as the old cannery, now San Benito Foods. In those days, the canneries had a trail whistle that called in the shifts and there was great excitement at the start of the season when both whistles called in their people.

The Hollister ladies would call the San Juan Bautista ladies to tell them to hurry in because the cannery had started.

I live just two blocks from San Benito Foods and can hear the noise from the steam right now. I find it comforting and soothing, and the smell of the tomatoes and the sound bring nostalgia for the old days when we had the two canneries.

I also would rather have the pleasant sound of the cannery than the harsh sounds of the Fourth of July motorcycles. That cannery provides jobs for people who need them.

Long live the cannery.”
