“For how long are you going to continue to subject the readers of this newspaper to the daily rantings spewing from Mr. Cantu?”
“Rumor has it that a certain county supervisor is going to be facing a tough challenger for re-election in a couple of years by a local publisher. It’ll sure to be fun to watch, as the supervisor tries to explain why he voted to cut the Sheriff’s and DA’s budget, and then turns around in one of the finest displays of hypocrisy in recent memory and criticizes them for not having the resources to do their jobs…
And speaking of elections, Richard Boomer, the ‘Back to the Future’ candidate for city council is going to be facing a stiff challenger. His worst nightmare: A smart, professional, well-spoken, and educated minority woman. No doubt he will still get the militia and NRA vote.”
“Here we are in the midst of the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression and the City of Hollister is worried about trying to build an arts center downtown. Still, no money is available for such a project.
The answer is obvious to anyone with some imagination. What we should do is build an Indian Casino on the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. A multi-story facility could accommodate underground parking, with the parking garage covering any spill over. The first floor could be the casino, and the second floor could double as an ‘arts center’ and convention center. Talk about drawing a lot of traffic to the downtown area.
No doubt the naysayers will rail against the supposed negative impacts of gambling. But, look at Nevada – first rate schools, a booming economy, even now, and no state income tax. So much for the negative effects of a gambling based economy.
The solution for downtown is so obvious, even a blind person could see it.
Rather than throw away any more of the city’s money on ‘handshake’ deals, the city should be actively looking for a tribal partner to build the casino. Done correctly, this could be a godsend!”
“Courthouse gossip has it that the ‘out of town judge’ and Judge Harry Tobias took exception to the Free Lance calling for the dismissal of all charges against Robert Orabuena.
If justice is dealt out evenhandedly, Robert will not have to do any additional time for what was nothing more than a traffic accident. However, my fear is the ‘out of town judge’ will make Robert pay for the Free Lance’s opinion.”
“I am shocked to hear the ongoing rumor that a strip bar is planned for downtown Hollister. Is this a way to balance the budget to pay for brick pavers and art center studies by Tony LoBue and friends? Nude women and lap dances? Just last year Tony said he was proud of the balanced budget and now we hear the budget has not been balanced for years. The city is heading in the wrong direction.
To think that a strip club would be considered for downtown is sickening. We already have a drug paraphernalia shop. I hope people speak out now against strip clubs in downtown Hollister. We don’t need sex clubs to pay for the past mistakes of a few and the rich businessmen who are not paying their bills to the city now.”
