I like your new addition to the paper!
I read with interest the article regarding the police chief
candidate, Jeff Miller. I find it unbelievable that the council did
not investigate more before placing him in the number one spot to
be the police chief here. Thank goodness there was a lot of media
and press attention here in Hollister forcing him to withdraw his
name form consideration.
Low morale in any segment of government business can cause
numerous problems. It is time for Hollister to join the 21st
century. Investigate potential candidates for positions thoroughly!
We are a small county, that doesn’t mean we have to be
backward!

“Just stopped in to visit our local Chamber of Commerce office to pick up the latest info on local businesses and was so impressed with how helpful the folks are at the Chamber. Nice group of people working there!

I have noticed that the Chamber is really doing a great job of serving its members under the leadership of its President Katherine Vais and Chamber Executive Director Theresa Kiernan. Keep up the good work, Chamber of Commerce! I am glad that I am now a member.”

“First the rally. I’m all for it!!! The apricot festival fizzled due to lack of interest and well, no ‘cots (anymore). The watermelon festival was the pits. And we don’t grow watermelons either.

This community needed SOMETHING to get added interest and revenue into our sleepy, serene and peaceful community other than new residents from the south Bay Area.

I’ve spent maybe a half-hour total of my 49 years on a motorcycle. Still, I’ve volunteered every year to help out with the HIRC event. It’s not that big an inconvenience and I live two blocks from downtown. I can live with the noise for one weekend a year. It’s not nearly as bad as the cannery noises that go on 24/7 for months!

As for the portable hoops. I think enough has been said. My query is about abandoned cars. Hollister Police cannot (or will not) demean themselves by actually enforcing the state and local parking laws. There’s a beige Chevy Nova by the Post Office that hasn’t moved for almost a year. Another gray something on West St. that hasn’t moved in at least six months. Cops must have passed them hundreds of times. No warnings, no tickets.

The recently departed former police chief told me that they ‘don’t do that.’ (tow away derelict cars) Why not?”

“So all the locals that don’t like the rally should go on vacation. How about all the locals that don’t like the rally band together and put pressure on the council to get rid of the rally and the minute that this city or any agency has to spend a penny on this rally, it’s time for it to go. I hope they hit them in their pocketbook next year and they come and monitor your wonderful rally. It might help if they could get all the vendors to report their sales in full. I realize service organizations would lose money, but they did manage before the rally and so did downtown, didn’t they?

I know the earthquake and fire hurt us bad, but look how beautiful downtown is coming along. We don’t need this on our little downtown street. You can sit around drinking, eating and spend money without doing it downtown. This event should be held at Bolado Park except the nimbys won’t let it happen. Nothing happens at Bolado Park anymore unless it’s very quiet. What a waste of a very useable facility.

So, if you don’t like this letter from another Old Timer, then why don’t you go on vacation to another city, permanently, and take this never-ending party with you.”
