“Thought local supervisors were supposed to cultivate and stimulate our local economy. That’s the least they can do after robbing the coffers of in excess of $40,000 per year.
However, our District 1 supervisor would rather cultivate Santa Cruz County’s economy as demonstrated with the purchase of a new vehicle from a Watsonville dealership.”

“Last night the City of Hollister approved the fiscal year 2003-04 budget for the coming year. I was puzzled when Finance Director Barbara Mulholland recommended with the approval of the new city manager Dale Shaddox that the city council approve the budget by not filling the four open police officer positions but only reconsidering filling two positions starting Oct. 1st to save money.
My question to the city council is when did we, the voters, elect you, to compromise our public safety in lieu of cost measures? The city council with Mulholland and Shaddox missed an opportunity to be creative in solving fiscal issues.
The city council with the big two could of filled four or maybe more police positions by looking elsewhere in the budget. For example, they could have cut one position in the animal department and some other department that is not as concern as public safety. Since when are dogs more important then people?
Another example the big two could have of done was increase fees like police reports and etc. to fund the two additional police positions.
Our community has grown so fast and big that the city council still approves budgets with little town services. You missed an opportunity to be creative in fiscal matters and address how to finance additional public services.
Maybe when our good public service personnel leaves our community for better paying jobs the city council will start becoming fiscally creative.”

Please do not print ‘continued’ in the obituary section. If your advertisers desire the second page then move the obituaries to another page in their entirety. Many of us ‘old folks’ have been lifelong readers, and subscribers to the Free Lance and are now having to play ‘find the obit’ to know it was time to console the family of a loved one.”
