The city is considering a deal with the local chamber of commerce to have the organization oversee the Hollister Motorcycle Rally.

If the Hollister City Council approves an agreement at a special meeting Wednesday night, the chamber would take over duties previously handled by the Hollister Motorcycle Rally Committee – replacing the panel as the chief overseer of the July event. The rally committee was formed in 2006 to resurrect the financially troubled operation.

The volunteer-run panel helped revive the Hollister Motorcycle Rally when it hired Horse Power Promotions to run the 2007 event, which returned from a one-year hiatus in July. City Manager Clint Quilter said today that the new partnership, if approved, shouldn’t affect the relationship with Horse Power Promotions owner Seth Doulton.

The promoter already has announced the 2008 rally dates, July 11-13.

Quilter commended the volunteer panel, but said the chamber provides an advantage with paid, full-time staff working on the rally.

“I think the committee deserves all the credit in the world for resurrecting the thing,” Quilter said.

The city and the chamber started discussions in the fall over a possible partnership.

Chamber Executive Director Jessica French could not be reached immediately.
