No flooding, mudslides or major fallen tree branches were reported in San Juan Bautista or Hollister after more than an inch of water fell in most of San Benito County during the first major rain of the season, according to city officials Monday afternoon.
“I haven’t heard of anything huge yet,” said Hollister’s City Manager Bill Avera, after consulting with Mike Chambless, the city’s director of management services by phone.
Crews have been cleaning out storm drains the last few months in preparation for the rains, Avera said.
Sites in Hollister reported slightly more than an inch of rain between midnight Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday, said Bob Benjamin, a forecaster with the National Weather Service’s Monterey and San Francisco area office. A site six miles north of Hollister received the most water in the county during that same time period with 1.37 inches of rain, the forecaster said.
In nearby San Juan Bautista, there was no major flooding, no mudslides and no issues with fallen tree branches, confirmed City Manager Roger Grimsley. A site in San Juan Bautista captured 1.20 inches of rain, the NWS forecaster said.
“We haven’t had any problems,” Grimsley said. “Our maintenance crews were preparing for it last week.”
Hollister residents looking for sand bags can get them from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hollister Municipal Airport located at 60 Airport Drive and the City Yard located at 1321 South St; or around the clock from Fire Station #2 at 1000 Union Road.
