McCarthy Park will soon have $70,000 worth of playground equipment, purchased with county funds. The city staff will maintain the park, which is located between Alvarado Street and Chappell Road, near San Andreas School.

Council members Monday approved allocating $140,000 in park funds to three new playground structures and avoided missing the chance at a $102,000 grant from the company offering the equipment.
The council considered a $102,359 grant from Game Time to go toward an additional city match of $140,000 for new playground equipment at Las Brisas Park, Park Hill and Jerry Game Memorial Park at the airport. The largest structure would go on Park Hill. Las Brisas Park would get a new structure with a new slide. And a structure called Alpine Adventure would go up at the Jerry Gabe airport park.
Mayor Ignacio Velazquez led a proposed delay in saying he wanted to put it off “so we do it right” and so officials can consult with neighbors before moving ahead on the allocation. City official Mike Chambless had presented the item and warned council members a delay could mean losing the grant funds.
Council members, though, approved the item in a 3-2 vote. Councilwoman Shari Stevenson joined the mayor in opposing the approval.
