When Gavilan College Professor Adrian Andrade passed the holiday donation bin in the lobby at the Briggs Building and noticed it was empty, he decided to get his students involved in a project to boost the offerings going to the Community Food Bank of San Benito County.

Andrade, who teaches communications, altered a class assignment and had a class of 30 students break down into groups of three and work on “group dynamics” to solve a problem, in this case a lack of donations and a need to increase them.

The students solicited donations from area businesses and brought in goods themselves. And in the end, the project ended up resulting in the adviser’s office at the front entrance being filled up with the donations from the class more than two weeks before Christmas.

“It worked out really, really well,” Andrade said.
