Benefit drive for SBHS freshman hits $20,000 fundraising mark,
exceeds goal
The annual San Benito High School Benefit Drive, which this year
raised money to help offset medical costs for cancer-stricken
freshman Diana Magana, recently passed the $20,000 fundraising
mark.
SBHS Activities Director Juan Robledo last week reported that
the goal of raising $15,000 for Magana’s family was surpassed by
$5,000, thanks for enthusiastic students and a supportive
community.

The annual San Benito High School Benefit Drive, which this year raised money to help offset medical costs for cancer-stricken freshman Diana Magana, recently passed the $20,000 fundraising mark.
SBHS Activities Director Juan Robledo last week reported that the goal of raising $15,000 for Magana’s family was surpassed by $5,000, thanks for enthusiastic students and a supportive community.
“I’ll be honest with you,” Robledo wrote in an e-mail to staff at the high school. “I thought the $12,600 raised the year before would be hard to beat. Well, they did it!”
The Associated Student Body organization, led by President Katie Thorpe, Vice President Jessica Romo and Commissioners of Community Affairs Sarah Bartholf and Manny Bueno, collected the most money since benefit drives began in 1996.
Using You Tube to promote the effort, ASB students had their cause go viral by creating music videos that encouraged locals to donate by “Dancing for Diana.”
“Our community responded with great generosity,” Robledo said. “I think all of us can be very proud to be a Baler today and very proud of our entire community for giving to someone in need of help. I hope we continue this generosity with our Relay for Life coming up on July 31.”
Robledo said that although he is proud of the amount of money raised, “nothing compares to the impact this entire drive made on all of our students, our staff, our parents and our community.”
