Several local highway exits and roads will be closed throughout the week for planned construction improvements.

From Tuesday through Saturday the off-ramp from southbound U.S. 101 to Highway 152/Pacheco Pass/10th Street will be closed each day from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for drainage system improvements.

Traffic at the off-ramp will be routed to Monterey Street and northbound to 10th Street., according to Valley Transportation Agency spokesperson Lupe Solis.

Also, both directions of Highway 152 between U.S. 101 and Gilroy Foods will have variable lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. throughout the week to install drainage systems for the area’s newly developed shopping centers.

The construction is all part of a 1996 Measure B transportation improvement program, which was a half-cent sales tax approved by voters.

Gilroy residents traveling near U.S. 101 and Highway 152 can expect to see continued construction in the area during the coming months and years as the VTA improves roadways to meet the traffic demands expected with the two new shopping centers east of the interchange.

The City of Gilroy will pay for one-third of the cost for all construction with the remainder funded from the Measure B, Solis said.

The Valley Transportation Agency project, which began in July, will widen the southbound U.S. 101 off-ramp to the Pacheco Pass Highway – which runs east from 10th Street – and construct a loop on-ramp for westbound 152 to southbound 101.

The upgrades will cost approximately $1.6 million and are scheduled to be complete by early 2004.

Other local construction throughout this week includes the Sixth Street/Gilman Road crossing of U.S. 101 to Highway 152. The crossing will be closed from 8 p.m. to midnight daily through Saturday for the construction of a safety barrier on the route.
