The San Benito County Fair is holding its 2003 Theme Contest, with the deadline for submissions April 4.

Anyone can enter a suggestion for the theme for this year’s fair, which will be held Oct. 2–5. Many students, teachers, classes and families have entered in past years. The winner receives $50 and a Fair Family Pass.

Fair Director Kelley Ferreira said specific ideas aren’t being sought.

“We pretty much just put it out there and let everybody run with it,” he said.

Examples of themes of years past include “Blue Skies, Small Fries, Apricot Pies,” “Sow It, Grow It and Show It,” “The Fairest of them All,” and last year’s “Our All American Fair.”

The theme, according to Ferreira, dictates the mood of the fair because exhibitors design booths around it.

“They all decorate around that theme,” he said. “The flower department last year – with ‘Our All American Fair’ – used red, white and blue.”

Last year the fair’s board of directors received about 20 entries, and Ferreira said he expects about 25 to 50 this year. The board will receive the submissions sometime before its April 9 meeting, where it will make the decision on the theme, Ferreira said.

When board members choose the 2003 theme, they will hire someone to perform the appropriate artwork, he said.

Send entries to San Benito County Fairgrounds, P.O. Box 790, Hollister, CA 95024.
