Hollister City Council members Monday approved contracting with Police Chief Jeff Miller after he retires at the end of December.
The four council members in attendance – Mayor Victor Gomez was absent – voted to approve the contract with Miller, who has been on the job for seven years, after he retires.
City officials hope the move not only saves money, but also provides a smooth transition for another chief, or the possibility of consolidating services with the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.
Leaders have noted how they might either promote a captain from within – there is one on staff, while the city is searching for a second – or hire from the outside, if they choose to bring on another permanent chief.
The contract with Miller provides the following:
– He will earn his current pay in wages, while he made $128,600 last fiscal year.
– He will get worker’s compensation benefits.
– He will receive a small uniform allowance.
– He will be allowed use of a car with some restrictions.
– The city will continue to pay for his membership in professional associations.
– He will not receive medical insurance.
– He will be restricted to a maximum of 960 hours in the deal.
– The contract is done as of June 30, while the city can cancel it with a short notice.
