Hollister council members are set to appoint a new mayor Monday with Eugenia Sanchez reaching the end of her one-year term.
Council members each December elect a new mayor among the group of five and they traditionally have rotated the position every year. Last year, council members appointed Sanchez as mayor. Former Councilwoman Monica Johnson had been next in line, but she did not seek reelection beyond 2008.
If council members follow the order Monday, Councilman and Vice Mayor Victor Gomez would become Hollister’s mayor for the year. The mayoral position here, as it is not elected at large by the entire citizenry, is largely a figurehead who attends local events, acts as chairman of the council meetings and appoints other members to commissions.
Monday’s meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at Hollister City Hall, 375 Fifth St.
