District 1 City Councilman Ray Friend is “doing very well” while recovering after a major surgery and long hospital stay, and the first-term official returned to the Hollister City Hall dais this week after a nearly three-month absence.

Friend spent a total of about 30 days in the hospital over a month-and-a-half period before he “finally had to have a major operation” on Aug. 3, he told the Free Lance. He missed eight city council meetings over the nearly three-month stretch.

Friend said he has been keeping up with city issues by continuing to read his reports and by watching “most” council meetings on TV. He also noted how when he had seen an interesting matter, he “made sure someone on the council was aware of my opinion.”

Friend returned for the council meeting Monday. He had been out since the July 20 meeting, according to minutes.

“I’m doing very well. Everything is looking extremely well,” said Friend, elected in November when nobody opposed his effort to succeed Brad Pike. “I still have an issue with strength and stuff. I’m still trying to recuperate.”
