The San Benito County Board of Supervisors today is set to hear a report from County Administrative Officer Susan Thompson on the status of the state budget. The board as part of the discussion will consider the adoption of a resolution to send to the state Legislature and the governor “urging” them against taking funds from the county’s general fund.

The state government has the option of borrowing funds from local jurisdictions’ property tax revenue to balance the budget by waiving Proposition 1A, which protects local government revenue for valued government services. The idea for borrowing from local entities arose after voters in the state failed to pass measures to fill in the budget gap, which currently sits at $24 billion.

The state could borrow up to 8 percent of the county’s property tax revenue or upwards of $1.6 million.

Thompson said she is confident that the protections set forth by Prop. 1A will ensure that the state repays the money it borrows.

“It’s a cash-flow issue,” she said. “It’s not an issue that requires us to make cuts on its own because it’s a loan that we expect to be repaid.”

The board meets at 9 a.m. at the Board of Supervisors Chambers in the County Administrative Building, 481 Fourth St., in Hollister.
