The San Benito County Free Library kicked off the 50th annual National Library Week by revealing its new Mobile Bus Family Learning Center and some new computers Tuesday afternoon.
The mobile bus was bought for $22,500 from the city of Woodlands. It is a 2001 model, 32 feet and diesel run.
The county last had a “bookmobile” in 2004. Unlike the last mobile bus, the physically challenged can go onto the new one with the lift that was built on it. Supervisor Jaime De La Cruz did the honors with the ribbon cutting in front of a crowd of nearly 20 people.
The library also has six new computers and one new printer. They will be used for homework, homework help and games.
And the games will be used as a learning experience for the children.
“It looks wonderful,” Youth Service Coordinator Wendy Kay said.
De La Cruz said it will bring a higher level of education for the community.
Library Director Nora Conte said local people made this happen while noting that about 375 people come into the library each day, she said.
This summer, there will be a summer reading club at the library, Kay pointed out.
“We can now reach families we haven’t been able to before,” Kay said.
The bookmobile will be going to the county fair and hitting up schools, she said. It will carry brochures on site for people to read and take home, Conte said.
