Believed to be San Benito County’s oldest resident, Virginia Snead has passed after recently reaching age 108.

Snead died in Hollister on June 22 after celebrating her 108th birthday June 4 at the Mabie Center.

Snead was born in San Francisco in 1901. Her family moved to San Benito County when she was at a young age when her father purchased an apricot orchard along Chappell Road.

Snead graduated from Hollister High School and San Benito Junior College before attending the University of California, Berkeley as one of the first female students there. She graduated in 1923 with a bachelor’s degree in history.

She met her husband, an electrical engineer, while in the Bay Area during those years.

Together, they traveled around the world to such countries as Japan and Fiji and visited many areas in Europe, Canada and Mexico.

She moved back to Hollister about eight years ago to be closer to family.

She is survived by her husband, Henry Christian Snead, and her sister and brother-in-law.
