Your grip is much like a steering wheel. Where you put your hands makes it easier or harder to hit the ball to the left or the right depending on your adjustment. Since most people have a tendency to slice the ball, we will talk about an adjustment that will help you hit the ball straighter.

The club head rotates through impact with the ball. If you slice, the rotation is either not enough, too late or you just “block” your hands totally going through the shot.

By turning your left thumb behind the club more so you can see three of your knuckles on your left hand, and by turning your right hand under the club so your palm is facing slightly upward, you are now in a “strong” grip position. This position allows you to rotate the club fully through impact and square the club face up at contact.

A good way to think of this grip position is to think that you were driving a car and only had use of your left hand. If you needed to make a left turn, you would grip the steering wheel on the right side (at about 4 o’ clock) so you can rotate it fully to turn the car to the left. Your grip is in essence at this 4 o’ clock position as well, so you can now rotate it fully and hit the ball straighter.
