The flyover was another major construction project on Highway 152.

State Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, has introduced a Senate resolution that would designate the flyover at the interchange of Highways 152 and 156 as the “Joseph A. Zanger Memorial Flyover.”

According to Denham in a statement from his office: “Joe Zanger was a relentless advocate for safety and transportation improvements that has positively affected thousands of motorists. Zanger’s Casa De Fruta business is a welcomed icon for those traveling along the Pacheco Pass on Highway 152. Naming the flyover after Zanger is a most appropriate tribute.”

The resolution would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing the designation and installing the signs after receiving donations from non-state sources to cover the cost.

Zanger’s Casa de Fruta business started with a small cherry stand built in 1943.

Zanger studied safety and economic issues related to the transportation system of Central California and served as an advocate for the improvement of transportation in that area.

In 1978, Joseph served on the planning committee for the State Highway Route 5 project from Stockton to Santa Nella/State Highway Route 152.
